Our latest signing at First Contemporary, Julie Mai is a Canadian artist based in the mountain village of Fornalutx, Mallorca.

A self-taught painter, Mai’s practice has evolved over two decades of creating – from representational painting employing traditional techniques to the dynamic abstract works she produces today. Working primarily in mixed media, Mai has recently returned to the storied art of encaustic painting, a hot wax technique developed by the ancient Greeks.

Mai’s work is at once mindful and energetic. The nature of the medium allows her work to evolve throughout the course of the day, its translucency dancing with the changing light of the surrounding environment.
