Andrew Hood’s latest series of oil paintings see a return to the capital, where he was greatly inspired by the spectacular views from London’s Sky Garden.

Located at the top of the iconic Walkie Talkie building, the Sky Garden offers expansive views across London and to the countryside beyond, which is mirrored in part by the larger scale of Andrew’s new paintings.

From the terrace on the 35th floor Andrew was able to watch the weather roll in, observing how the light changes with the movement of the clouds and the impact of this on the city below.

The new work encapsulates the area around London Bridge, stretching along the Thames to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London and on to St Pauls. However, the sense of drama from the shifting weather conditions combined with the far-reaching views inspired Andrew to focus on creating atmosphere in the paintings rather than honing in on specific details of the landscape.

“It’s a special feeling to look out across the city, that’s what I want to try and convey in these works.”

Andrew has pared back the compositions of his new paintings to include just the bare essentials whilst attempting to evoke a sense of drama. The colour palette is also more minimal, reflecting the hazy autumnal light, with splashes of colour providing hints of the buzz of the city below.
